Some 17,000 people in the UK suffer deafness, ringing in the ears or other ear conditions caused by excessive noise at work. Tinnitus, Noise induced hearing loss and other hearing related conditions are entirely preventable when the Regulations governing noise at work are adhered to.
The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 place specific duties on employers to assess the risk to employees (and others affected by their undertakings) from exposure to noise in the workplace.
Depending on the level of risk, employers must take action to reduce the noise exposure and also provide hearing protection where appropriate.
This course is designed for employers and employees who are exposed to noise in the workplace. These persons include those:
- Who work in a noise intrusive environment;
- Who have to raise their voice to have a normal conversation when about 2m apart for at least part of the day;
- Who use power tools or noisy machinery for over half an hour per day;
- Who work in a noisy industry, e.g. construction, demolition or road repair, woodworking, plastics processing; engineering; textile; manufacturing; general fabrication; forging; pressing or stamping; paper or board making; canning or bottling or foundries;
- Whose work involves noise because of impacts (e.g. hammering, drop forging, pneumatic tools etc.) or operate cartridge operated tools or detonators, or guns.
